Illicit Family Planning

Men in Maracha and Yumbe have found a method of family planning that the authorities would not be too excited about: khat. Patrick Odudo from Maracha says that men walking around with plastic bags of khat strapped to their belts are now a common sight. “They chew it all day. They say it reduces their libido,” he says. The effectiveness of the drug as a family planning method is yet to be established, although Odudo and many other residents remain unconvinced. It is thought that many of the men climing to have made the discovery are simply addicts trying to cover their tracks.

News-Hapa recently ran a story (http://www.news-hapa.com/story/122/) about the use of young children as labour on numerous khat farms in Maracha.
