Moyo: Mass Animal Vaccination
A mass vaccination drive was arranged in Moyo, in the subcounties of Dufele, Lefori, Metu and Moyo Town Council. The drive, which was aimed at domestic animals including cows, sheep and goats, was arranged by the district veterinary department under the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries. Some of the diseases vaccinated against are Contagious Caprine Pleuropneumonia (CCPP), a disease that attacks the lungs of goats and sheep, Contagious Bovine Pleuropneumonia (CBPP), a similar disease that affects cows, as well as foot and mouth disease (FMD). Anne Chandia, an official with the Moyo veterinary department reports that the response from farmers was encouraging. “They never used to take vaccination seriously, but now they are participating in big numbers,” she says. Farmers had to pay 2000 shillings per animal, which is half the price they would have to pay elsewhere. The vaccination is arranged by the veterinary department with the help of the ministry, which sends vaccines to the district free of charge. The fee that the farmers pay is to facilitate the staff. “It is an annual event, and next year we hope to include dogs, and vaccinate them against rabies,” says Chandia.
